The second short story for Malibu was just as interesting to do as the first one.
I didn’t receive a traditional script for “Bloodlust.” Instead I think I got a few framing notes, and the rest was merely the lead character’s first-person narration. So I was free to design and pace it as I saw fit. As a result, I was able to use a lot of the storytelling and design devices that I was into at the time. Like the other short story for Malibu, this is one of the better pieces of my early career.

I’ve never had much of a problem with explicit sexuality, and quite enjoyed exploring the horror aspects of the story. It was an adults only book, so anything was fair game within the confines of the story.
Malibu had a very nice office manager whose name I’ve forgotten. She was somewhere around my age and quite pretty. When I was hanging with the Malibu crew at San Diego, she seemed like a nice person. I never got to know her, and went on back to Calgary after Comicon. I spoke to her briefly once or twice when I called into the office, and it was pleasant enough.
After I sent in this story, I never spoke to her again. Tom Mason, the creative director, told me I had creeped her out pretty badly. I’m guessing she was the one who unpacked the FedEx boxes when art came into the offices.
Really, I didn’t think it was that out there. I look at the depiction of male genitalia now as being a little derivative of Alien, only more literal. On the other hand, it was a tale of erotic horror, and if I creeped her out, well, I had done my job. So, whoever you were, sorry about that. The only dirty part of me is my mind.

The story appeared in Erotique #1, May 1991, with a cover by Ross Fanucchi. Released under the Aircel Comics imprint.
