The Forbidden Manuscript

The Forbidden Manuscript

This book is in the vein of The DaVinci Code, and I chose to create the design for it as something more than an average mass-market item.

Using the idea of the manuscript throughout the book allows the reader to become involved with the text in a way that a standard typesetting run would not accomplish. Starting with the cover, I had previously thought of commissioning a standard painting, or manipulating photo imagery, for the idea of the mass-market paperback look. Instead, the idea of the physical book, old and worn as a symbol for the secrets long hidden now being exposed, is slightly off-beat and unexpected, setting it apart from the mainstream.

Assignment : Earth

Assignment Earth eBook Cover

“Assignment: Earth” aired in the spring of 1968 as the last episode of the second season of the original Star Trek. It began, however, as a completely separate pilot script by Gene Roddenberry almost two years earlier.

By the time it became a pilot within a series, Art Wallace had added his own ideas to the original concept, and created a series bible and the final script with Roddenberry.

Here’s to the Crazy Ones

Think Different

I have an uneasy relationship with advertising. On one hand, as a graphic designer, it can be very satisfying to reach an audience with your message and have them respond in the way you want them to (becoming informed, taking action, making a purchase, and so on). On the other, when used to drive an audience to respond purely on an emotional level without engaging their facility for critical thinking, I believe it to be unethical and ultimately damaging to us as a people.

The United Nations and Human Rights

united_nations_human_rights-600x242

As designers, we spend so much time focussed on our clients’ needs – providing service – that we can sometimes overlook the outlet for our own expression as communicators.

The past few years have been pretty tumultuous socially, politically and economically. And as things have gotten worse, we see our leaders taking us down a path that appears to be erasing the rights and freedoms so many that came before us fought and died for.

Alberta Venture : Retail Therapy

Alberta Venture Retail Therapy

My favourite story while working on Alberta Venture was about Alberta’s first mall, Westmount. Archival images, a timeline, and a re-creation of the shopping centre’s first layout. I just wish we had more pages. Grey box is where an ad was.

That Place on the Hill

ACAD

When I was a younger man, I thought being book smart made me smart in life, but I was absurdly ignorant about the latter.

At 21, I was years away from understanding anything about myself, and I was at the end of my first three years at the Alberta College of Art (now The Alberta College of Art & Design : ACAD). College was not like high school, and the visual communications program demanded a level of maturity, discipline and talent I did not have at that point in my life. And not being able to deal with it, my behaviour was disruptive and not appropriate for someone who was hoping to become a contributing member of society, let alone a creative professional.
