View-Master Tribute Poster

Introduced at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, the View-Master came into its own during the stereo photography (or 3D to you movie and comics fans) craze of the 1950s. It is easy to forget that the View-Master was once a successful mass-market product akin to today’s VCR and DVD player. It was family entertainment. Millions of reels have been sold and a collectors’ community thrives today.

View-Master is now owned by Mattel. While the original viewers and reels are still available, they have moved the brand into the modern technology of smartphone apps.

View-Master Parts

To create the illustration, the viewer was split apart into its components and placed on a flatbed scanner.

View-Master Construction

Each scan was traced in Illustrator, with the different surfaces arbitrarily coloured for contrast during this phase. Projecting the flat drawings into isometric perspective with CADtools, the art was then extended manually to create the structure. After making sure all the details were right, the surfaces were modelled.

The final piece was combined with scans of vintage items and other source material.

With an item sample, blueprints or sketches, I can create something of equal high quality to tell your product’s story.

    Hi Scott!

Thanks for the wonderful “memory”-table of the simplicity behind one of the most outstanding magic moments of my childhoods – The View-Master!!

I still have my viewer (ca. 1967) plus several reels of Disney, Bonanza, TinTin and Mighty Mouse – all adorable!

I’ll sign up to your blog for more interesting stuff!

    Cheers Ulrik…

I love the image you made!
I saw a lot of images which related to View-Master, but I think this is the best.
Thank you for sharing this poster and work process info.

    Hi again,

The View-Master group has not been as active as it was in the past and that’s a shame but hey, interest tends to ebb and flow.

When you first posted your free poster I took the opportunity at that time to download it and print it out full size. It remains a remarkable tribute to the iconic “toy” of our youth.

Thanks again for picking this for your project and for making it available.
